2026 Form W-4 · Step 4(b) · Deductions Worksheet lines 1a–1c
Why taxes are still withheld — and how to fix it on Form W-4
No tax on tips and no tax on overtime are filing-time deductions, not an automatic raise in take-home pay. Enter an estimate of those deductions (and qualified car loan interest) on the 2026 Form W-4 Deductions Worksheet, then put line 15 in Step 4(b) and give the form to your employer.
How Step 4(b) works on the 2026 W-4
- Complete the Step 4(b)—Deductions Worksheet on page 4 of Form W-4 (2026). Lines 1a (tips), 1b (overtime premium), and 1c (car loan interest) add on line 2. Seniors, other adjustments, and itemized-vs-standard math feed lines 3–14. Line 15 is the total.
- Enter line 15 in Step 4(b) on page 1. The amount is annual, not per paycheck.
- Give the signed W-4 to your employer (payroll or HR). Do not mail it to the IRS.
- Prefer the official IRS Tax Withholding Estimator when you have multiple jobs, mid-year changes, other income, or want a pre-filled W-4.
Form W-4 Step 4(b) instructions: enter the worksheet line 15 amount if you expect deductions other than the basic standard deduction — including qualified tips, overtime compensation, passenger vehicle loan interest, and the enhanced senior deduction (2026 Form W-4; Pub. 505).
Assumptions this tool states plainly
- Tips, overtime, and car loan interest use the same caps and MAGI phaseouts as Schedule 1-A on this site — not the printed worksheet’s simpler “income under threshold” cliff.
- Qualified overtime means only the FLSA-required premium above the regular rate (the “half” in time-and-a-half), matching worksheet line 1b and § 225.
- The paycheck figure is approximate: annual Step 4(b) amount × the marginal rate you pick ÷ pay periods. It ignores other withholding steps, credits, state tax, and year-to-date tax already withheld.
- FICA still applies. Social security and Medicare withholding do not fall because of these deductions.
- If overtime hours or tips fall short of your estimate, you can under-withhold. Update the W-4 when your situation changes.
- Married filing separately cannot claim the tips or overtime deductions; this tool returns $0 for those lines when MFS is selected.

Questions
Why didn’t my take-home pay go up after no tax on tips or overtime?
Those rules are deductions you claim on Schedule 1-A when you file, not an automatic payroll change. Tips and overtime are still wages: they stay in Form W-2 box 1 and remain subject to federal income tax withholding and to social security and Medicare tax (FICA). To reduce income-tax withholding during the year, give your employer a new 2026 Form W-4 that puts an estimate of the deduction in Step 4(b).
What do I enter on Form W-4 Step 4(b)?
Step 4(b) takes the annual amount from the Deductions Worksheet, line 15 — deductions beyond the basic standard deduction. For 2026, that worksheet’s lines 1a (qualified tips), 1b (qualified overtime “and-a-half” premium), and 1c (qualified passenger vehicle loan interest) feed line 2, which is part of line 15. Enter the annual total, not a per-paycheck figure. Give the completed W-4 to your employer, not to the IRS.
Does the W-4 worksheet use the same phaseouts as Schedule 1-A?
Not exactly. The printed 2026 W-4 Deductions Worksheet lines 1a–1c use a simplified income test: enter an estimate only if total income is under the listed threshold, up to the cap. Schedule 1-A phases the same deductions down gradually ($100 per whole $1,000 of MAGI for tips and overtime; $200 per $1,000 or portion for car loan interest). This tool uses the Schedule 1-A caps and phaseouts so the Step 4(b) figure tracks what you expect to claim.
Will my paycheck change by the full deduction?
No. A deduction reduces taxable income, so the rough paycheck effect is about the deduction times your marginal tax rate, spread across remaining pay periods — not the face amount of the deduction. Social security and Medicare withholding do not drop because of these deductions. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator is the official tool for a more complete withholding picture.
What if overtime or tips fall short of my estimate?
If you put too large an amount in Step 4(b), too little income tax may be withheld and you can owe tax (and possibly a penalty) when you file. Revisit the form when hours, tips, or your loan interest change. Understating the deduction leaves more tax withheld and a larger refund later.
Do I still pay FICA on tips and overtime?
Yes. The tips and overtime deductions do not reduce social security or Medicare wages. Only federal income tax withholding is adjusted through Form W-4 Step 4(b).
